BOARD CHARACTERISTICS AND CARBON EMISSIONS: THE ROLE OF CSR COMMITTEE

Abstract

The urgent worldwide issue of climate change brought on by rising greenhouse gas emissions is the main subject of this study. It also evaluated the possible moderating effect of the CSR Committee as well as the impact of board characteristics like size, tenure, and gender diversity on carbon emissions. 285 observations from 57 ASEAN-based energy companies made up the dataset. These were recorded between 2020 and 2024 and approximated using panel data regression. The findings demonstrated that while board size and tenure did not exhibit statistical significance, board gender diversity had a significant and favorable impact on carbon emissions. Additionally, the association between board size and gender diversity and carbon emissions was marginally reduced by the CSR Committee, which also lessened the impact of board tenure. This demonstrated that rather than significant environmental accountability, internal governance mechanisms in ASEAN energy corporations relied on symbolic pleasure. To guarantee that CSR committees have supervisory authority in advancing 
decarbonization efforts, regulators and policymakers in the ASEAN region must enforce more stringent, required requirements.
